There are several myths about Golden Retriever origins, the most popular that they came from a line of Siberian circus dogs.
Nope!
Lord Tweedsmuir in around 1850, bred the first from different breeds: a yellow retriever, a tweed water spaniel, an Irish Setter. a sand coloured bloodhound and a St Johns Water dog (Newfoundler?). This was done at his estate at Guisachan in Glen Afric (near Loch Ness)
Guisachan House is mostly a shell, but every so often there is a meet up of Goldens and their humans, in 2006 around 188 goldens turned up, in 2013 , 222, in 2018, 361, and for 2023 ????
